Hamish is home!

Thank you everyone for following me on my two-year missionary adventure in Sacramento California. This site will remain online forever; as a reminder of the days I spent in the service of God. A reminder of the sad, happy, wet, dry, sweet, painful and the outright crazy. But most of all, a reminder of the love God has for his children. If you're curious what I'm up to these days, please visit my personal site.

Till we meet again,

We’re soaring… flying…

October 19th, 2009

… and getting SOAKING wet. Yup, that’s right ladies and gentlemen, this is another update from your more-than-a-little-damp missionary, Elder Macpherson.

So I guess I’ll start with Tuesday of this past week. Are you ready for this? Well, to be brief. It rained. All day. But it didn’t just rain. It poured. It dumped. AND the wind was blowing with 30mph gusts. And we, your faithful Elders, were outside, on bikes, the whole day. To say that I got wet would be a gross understatement. I was drenched from head to to toe. Well, with the exception of my torso area since my jacket did help with that. But otherwise… my feet, legs, socks, shoes, and head, felt as if they were completely submerged in water. Fortunately we got into a few homes. And again fortunately the rain let up in the evening. But that day was the worst I’ve seen. Of course, it was also the worst Sacramento has seen… in 40 years! Can you believe my luck? I know… me neither. Trees everywhere were getting blown down, with branches and leaves clogging the gutters, which subsequently caused several small streets and even major intersections to fill with water like lakes! No joke. I was biking through water so deep that when I down-pedaled on my bike, my whole foot got dunked. Outstanding!

So yeah. That was Tuesday. And aside from some smaller showers on Wednesday morning, the rest of the week was quite enjoyable! With no rain at all. Which is a good thing, since it gave time for everyone to clean up the horrendous mess from Tuesday… not to mention time for all that water to drain!

On Thursday we did our weekly planning and then went out to work. Me and Elder Zimmerman were tracting a street not far from our dinner appointment later that evening, but since it was much shorter than we expected, and we still had time, we both felt prompted to tract another street nearby. We went ahead and did just that, and not more than 3 or 4 houses down we met Jill! Jill came out of her house, and at first thought that a member friend of hers had sent us. But we’d never talked to her friend before…  anywho we talked to Jill for a while and found that she was a very sweet lady, very interested, and very open. She was flying to visit family in the Eastern US the next day, so after talking we gave her a Book of Mormon to read and pray about. She gladly accepted it. We have an appointment to see her this Wednesday, I hope it goes well.

We have a few other people we’re working with now too. And I can feel things really picking up in this area. I’m excited for the next few weeks. On Friday we had Interviews with President Jardine. Something that I always love. It went really well!

It’s getting colder and wetter here (as evidenced by the 2nd paragraph), so I’m trying to gear up and prepare for that. I need to get some fenders on my bike, and some rain pants, and, well… somehow waterproof my shoes!

Thanks to everyone who writes me emails and letters. You guys are the best. I hope you’ll keep it up. Snail mail is the best pick-me-up!

Well, I better be off. It was raining when we biked here to the uiniversity to email, so it’s probably still raining now. *sigh* … At least it’s pday.

Love,
Elder Macpherson
