Hamish is home!

Thank you everyone for following me on my two-year missionary adventure in Sacramento California. This site will remain online forever; as a reminder of the days I spent in the service of God. A reminder of the sad, happy, wet, dry, sweet, painful and the outright crazy. But most of all, a reminder of the love God has for his children. If you're curious what I'm up to these days, please visit my personal site.

Till we meet again,

Thanksgiving approaches…

November 16th, 2009

Greetings to my fellow brothers and sisters, family and friends. I’ve got lots of interesting news for you all today, are you ready? [You: Yes!] Great, then let’s not waste any more time!

This past week started like most… on Monday, our  preparation day. But it ended on a rather different note. I started the day with writing all the emails my Dad mentioned in the last post (By the way, thanks Dad, I love you!) and then we went off to do our weekly shopping, and then finally to a zone activity with all the other missionaries here in Cordova. So what happened at the end of the day, you ask? Well, Elder Zimmerman got a call from President Jardine (which isn’t uncommon since he would call at least once a day to follow up with how Elder Z’s back was feeling) and after talking for a a few minutes, Elder Z came back and told me that he was getting transferred to the office to rest, and that President wanted to talk to me… *pause for effect* So I picked up the phone…

ME: “Hey President, how’s it going?”
PREZ: “Great, Elder Macpherson, how are you?”
ME: “I’m doing great… so what’s going to happen to my companion?”
PREZ: “Well, we’re going to take him into the office for a few weeks, and Elder Macpherson… I’m going to have you train a new missionary. And you’re going to have to do it without any training yourself.”

Well, that’s what he said in a nutshell. But yup, that’s the truth… and the next day, the assistants came down to drop of my “Greenie” and take Elder Z away! Oh and the reason he said that I wouldn’t have any “training” is because usually when you have new missionaries come in, all the trainers are trained on how to be good… well… trainers!. But since Elder Bellingham (more in him in a  sec!) came in by himself in the middle of a transfer (hey, sound familiar?) there’s no real orientation for me OR him.

So Elder Bellingham is my new companion, my greenie, and my boy! He’s from North Carolina, a place called Statesville, north of Charlotte. He has a cool southern drawl, not too thick but definitely noticeable. He’s a great missionary, and we get along just swell. He actually served very briefly in India about a year ago (for barely a week), but things didn’t work out. So he’s come back, and now received a call out here, and here he is in Sacramento! The best mission in the world.

I’m SO happy to be back on bike, and back to working full days, and coming home tired. It’s refreshing. We’ve been having some great success, and I’m excited for these next few weeks. Elder Zimmerman is still healing up, he’s actually hoping to come back into the area eventually, making us a “threesome” as they say. More on that as the story develops. (His back is healing slowly, so he’s probably going to get an MRI to look at it in depth)

The weather here is COLD. But it’s all relative right? It’s definitely not gonna be like winters in Canada. The big thing right now is American Thanksgiving, coming up next week. Speaking of which, next monday will NOT be a pday, so no email/blog post. But the Pday will instead be on Thanksgiving day. SO keep that in mind folks!

All right I’ve gotta split. We’ve gotta go buy some supplies for the week, and get my companion his own bike!

Love,
Elder Macpherson

PS. Jasmine. I expect a full report + pics from Hawaii. Okay?
Love you! ;)

PPS. Thank you ALL for your replies to my emails last week, no time to respond just yet. But I will! Love you all! :)
