Who steals bikes from missionaries?
January 12th, 2010
Elder Macpherson here with another update from the currently not-so-sunny Sacramento (more on that later). So… does everyone remember when my bike seat got stolen back in July? … Yeah? Good job! Well, believe it or not I’ve managed to top that. A few days ago we — well, I was on an all day exchange in a different area, so Elder Bellingham and another missionary — went to our dinner appointment, and when they came out, the bikes were GONE. Y’see they locked them together in the driveway, but not to anything… and so someone must have dragged them away and thrown ‘em into a truck… and off they went.
That was pretty much the worst part of the week. That bike was NOT cheap. *sigh* — But now I’m pretty much resigned to the fact that I’ll never see them again, now we’re borrowing bikes from the Zone Leaders, so at least we can still get things done.
So how’s the work going in the Brighton Ward? Well, it’s up and down. We’re teaching some nice people right now, including an Asian lady named Bao who just had her baby this last week… she wants to be baptized, but the whole pregnancy is putting things off a bit. But I think it’ll all work out in the end. We’re also teaching another lady named Rayma who we met while biking/talking to people a week and a half ago. We’ve already taught her twice and she’s definitely interested… hopefully we can get her to come to church.
The first two Sundays of 2010 were interesting. We start church at 1pm now (they switch every year with the other Ward, “Perkins”), we used to be at 9am. So it’s weird having more time in the morning. It’s definitely easier to go and face to face the people we’re teaching, as we call it (basically, encourage them to come to church that day) — This last Sunday I actually spoke in sacrament meeting, by the bishop’s request. He gave me five minutes to talk and I ended up speaking for fifteen. He wasn’t very happy about that. Oooops. Well, it’s a good thing our Bishop likes us! Seriously though, I could never fill the time before my mission… I guess I can actually talk now.
Well, as I mentioned before it’s really not so sunny here anymore. It’s pretty much cold & gray every day! Fortunately though it hasn’t rained on us yet. So far so good.
Well, take care everyone. If any of you are feeling generous… please write me! I love the snail mail.
Sincerely,
Elder Hamish Macpherson
